Before the grocery store. Before the supermarket. Before the can aisle existed at all — someone printed these by hand, one color at a time.
This is an original evaporated milk can label — a circa 1910s stone lithograph for Bess Brand, United Milk Products Corporation. It has never been used. Never wrapped a can. It is New Old Stock in excellent mint condition, found in a box under the stairs of an old cannery in the process of being demolished — one of the most evocative provenances in American ephemera collecting.
The label is spare and striking. A Guernsey cow's head — rendered with the careful, limited palette of early stone lithography, when two or three colors was all the craft allowed and all the craftsman needed — occupies the face of the label. Color printing of this complexity took three to four months of plate-making before a single impression could be pulled. The result, over a century later, is a piece of early American dairy industry design that holds its ground completely. Three available.
Frame it as farmhouse or dairy decor, as early Americana, or as part of a collection of antique milk labels. At 10.0 by 4.0 inches it suits a narrow 11x5 or 12x6 frame and works beautifully in a kitchen, a mudroom, a breakfast room, or anywhere that welcomes the quiet dignity of early American commercial art.
A wonderful gift for a dairy history enthusiast, a farmhouse decor collector, an Americana collector, or anyone drawn to the beauty of what American commercial lithography looked like before the can aisle existed.
A note on can label collecting: Original lithographic can labels from this era are far scarcer than crate labels — produced in smaller quantities, more fragile, and less often preserved. NOS examples like this one represent the finest of what survives from American food industry history.
